A costume designer has a big job on his or her plate. Not only does this person need to choose the right clothing and accessories, but the job’s success is also dependent on how realistic the professional can make the costume look. For the right people, this is a fun, interesting job that challenges them regularly.

Understanding the Costume Designer

For those who plan to dress up in a costume, and love every minute of doing so, consider a career path in this field. However, the challenge here is pulling off a realistic look and allowing the subject to no longer look like he or she is wearing a mask. Rather, the person should bring the clothing and accessories to life. What does this professional do?

The job of a costume designer often includes the development of the look of the character. Some will work closely with directors and writers to make sure that all have the same vision of whom this person should look like before moving on.

The design, development and creation of the costumes is the most hands-on work this professional does. Fittings are the last step, but in between, he or she needs to create the look from the ground up.

In addition, having the right accessories can be critical. Other details of his or her job include ensuring the ease of changing into and out of the clothing, ensuring it moves with the actor and ensuring it is durable.

For those who are considering this career path, enjoy playing dress up. However, you need also to enjoy the fabrication and idea development that goes along with it.

Have you ever been interested in costume designing? Here is an overall description of what they do.

Obviously, a costume designer chooses costumes for characters, whether for a movie, TV show, or play. They will either design the costume and have it made or will find clothes that are already made. It depends on the type of show that’s the designer is costuming. If it’s a fantasy, then more than likely, the designer will have costumes created according to his or her designs. If it’s contemporary, then the clothes will likely be chosen from stores.

When deciding on a costume for a character, there are a lot of things that go into choosing that outfit. The designer must consider the character. What would he like? If she pick if she went into a department store? Would his mom or wife pick out clothes for him, or would he pick clothes for himself? If it’s a historical piece, then a lot of research must go into understanding what clothes were popular at the time and what kinds of fabrics were used to make clothes.

If it’s a fantastical film, then the designer is basically taking whatever direction is given to him or her and creating fashions based on that. More than likely, these clothes will be of the designer’s creation, almost like creating a whole fashion line. The designer still must consider the character in deciding what he or she would wear.

The best designers are able to create authentic costumes that fit the characters and the production.

When you think about costume designing, like most people you probably have a vision in your head of turn of the century dresses for women and the lavish costumes you see on stage and in the theater. Although this is true, there is also a more mainstream side to costume designing.

The clothes that you see characters wearing on TV and in the movies have to be chosen and put together by someone who knows fashion, and they are considered costumes. When a movie is produced the writer, director, and producer all have a vision of what the scene is supposed to look like and this includes what all the characters in the scene are wearing.

In order to put costumes or clothes together for characters you need to have an eye for fashion, and you need to be able to put the whole package together. In order to do this you may need to draw sketches to show producers what you have in mind. You also need to be able to find the clothes for the characters to wear. This could mean hitting the streets and shopping for just the right outfit.

After the clothes are chosen, a costume designer will also work with the set designers to make sure everything works together, and they will also work with the fitters and the actors to make sure everything fits properly and looks right once it is all put together.

So although costume designing can mean coming up with out of the ordinary and period clothing, it can also be a more mainstream job for a person who has a background in fashion and an eye for detail.

Have you ever wondered why a character in a movie, show, or play looks the way they do? Who chooses their clothes, hairstyles, makeup, and accessories? These details are often determined by one of three types of costume designers, who create the looks of characters in movies, plays, theaters, and dance productions.

The freelance designer is typically hired on for certain productions. Freelance designers can travel from area to area or from company to company often. Since freelance designers are independent they can design for multiple companies or production theaters if they wish.

Residential designers are those who are hired on for an extended amount of time as well as for an extended series of productions. Companies hire residential designers for periods typically ranging from a few months to a matter of years depending on the need for their services. These designers are often limited in the amount of freelance assignments they can do, and are kept on location readily available to work with the hiring companies’ costume studio as needed.

A third type of costume designer, the academic designer, is an individual that maintains a professorship at an educational facility, providing instruction to students who are aspiring to work in the costume design field. These designers are noted as being professionals with a high degree of experience and are often required to have a Masters of Fine Arts degree.

Whatever the type, costume designers have been entertaining audiences with style, looks, and excitement for years and will continue to do so for years to come.

Designing costumes for period films can be very difficult. It takes a significant amount of research to get things “just right.” For films like Pride and Prejudice, which is set in the 1790s, few if any actual garments still exist. Costume designers must depend on existing sketches and paintings from the period, as well as the interpretations of previous costume designers. It can be a daunting task.

Costume designers also often rely heavily on prop or costuming shops to outfit the actors in the production they are working on. But these resources often have very little in the way of clothing and accessories meant to look as though they are from this time period. That means the costume designers have to have many outfits created from scratch. This was the case with the 1995 BBC production of “Pride and Prejudice.”

The designers who worked on the film have said many of the fabrics that would have been commonly used in this time period aren’t made anymore. For this particular film, the solution was to have modern fabrics printed to look like fabrics from the time period; and to have the clothing created from that.

In the 2005 “Pride and Prejudice” production, the costume designer has said she used the cut and colors of clothes to help tell the story in an interesting way. For example, the costume designer dressed Mr. Darcy to reflect the personality change he experiences. At first, his clothing is stiff and formal, much like his attitude to the people at the Meryton assembly. But by the end, when he and Elizabeth reach an understanding, he is dressed in much loser, more flowing clothes.

There are several unique and interesting trends in accessories this year that are certain to make their way into many of the movies that are heading to production. Costume designers have to stay up-to-date on the latest trends so that they are ready to dress an actor in the latest style, should a script call for it.

This year, one hot accessory trend is the obi belt. This wraparound belt style is derived from the belts traditionally used with Japanese kimonos. The styles vary widely, from understated size and material to big and boldly colored.

Bangle bracelets are another hot accessory trend. One bangle is not enough – wearers are piling them on and mixing and matching colors and materials. Look for bangles made of plastic, metal, wood and a combination of materials. A bonus is that bangles are an inexpensive way to make a bold style statement – perfect for a costume designer who needs to dress an actor on a budget.

Purses are always a hot accessory item. For the past several years big purses were “in.” Now, small and medium sized purses seem to be gaining more popularity. This year, designers have added tassels of different sizes to many of their creations. The tassels add movement and interest to the bags, and would look great on screen.

Finally, watch for a changing trends in sunglasses. For years now big black sunglasses with dark lenses have been the standard. But now, as all things 1970s seem to be coming back in vogue, so too are the large tinted sunglasses of the era. Designers are now making these with a modern twist by using much brighter colors. These types of sunglasses are certain to appear in many movies and television shows soon.

Costume designers have an important role in film and stage productions. They create the costumes the actors will wear in the production, which can greatly impact the success of a movie or play. If their designs are off, it can be incredibly difficult for the audience to become fully immersed in the production.

Costume designers will often work with the set designers and makeup artists to help create a cohesive look for a film or play. It goes without saying that a costume designer must have a thorough knowledge of fashion, including fabrics, patterns and more. There are many things a costume designer must consider when creating the costume for a character. The designer must stay true to the director’s vision, while considering the durability of the design and the fabric used to create it, the movements the actor must make while wearing the design and more.

The first thing a costume designer must do when beginning work on a new production is read the script to understand the piece, the characters and what they will be doing. Sometimes, a designer will create costumes from purchased pieces. Other times, especially for historical or fantastical productions, a designer will work from scratch by creating sketches and patterns, and having the costumes sewn. As in any field, budget is always an important consideration.

Costume designers can be freelancers, hired on by a theater or production company for a specific play or film; or they can be resident designers hired on to work on a number of productions for an extended period of time.

The variety of costumes created for movies is a varied as the types of movies themselves. From science fiction to historical romance and everything in between, costume designers play an important role in creating the overall feel and experience of a movie.

In the most recent Oscars, the film “True Grit” was nominated for Best Picture. But for those interested in the field of costume design, it was the actors’ wardrobe that was the highlight of the movie. Designer Mary Zophres did a wonderful job recreating clothing that would have been worn in the American west more than 100 years ago.

To create successful costumes for an historical film, a designer must study the fashions of the given time period. For “True Grit,” Zophres understood that the costumes had to reflect the simplistic durability of the fashions of the time – simple lines, warm fabrics and comfortable cuts were important then, and were therefore important to the development of the film.

For contrast, compare the costumes in “True Grit” to those in the most recent adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland.” Here, fantastical designs rule the day. Costume designer Colleen Atwood bolstered the success of the film by dressing the stars, especially Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, in outrageous style fitting the fantasy film. One must believe that Atwood worked closely with the set designer for the costumes and sets to blend as beautifully as they did.

There is no limit to the creativity a costume designer can express in film throughout the course of his or her career.

Fun and unique date ideas can be hard to come by, especially in a struggling economy where one or both partners may not have a lot of extra money to spend on an evening out. However, attending a costume party can be a great way to spend time with friends while experimenting with the creative side. Throwing a costume party doesn’t have to be limited to Halloween; instead hosts can think of unique ways to incorporate themes of current events into a party all year round.

When attending a themed costume party, it could be fun to dress up as famous politicians and their spouses around election time, or as an athlete and cheerleader if the party is centered around a specific sporting event. For a Halloween party, couples have plenty of options for costumes. They might choose a king and a queen, Hansel and Gretel, Tarzan and Jane, a fork and a spoon, a plug and a socket, Fred and Betty Flinstone, Lucy and Ricky, or salt and pepper shakers. Choosing a costume geared toward couples can help the partners feel more connected to one another, while having a fun and memorable time with friends.

Dating can be tough, especially for those who have trouble meeting new people at work or school. Many are now meeting their significant others through online dating, which can be a great way to break the ice and meet people who are looking for similar qualities in a partner. With so many websites designed to link local singles and communicate safely, the online dating world continues to grow, and members continue to meet others with whom they see potential for a long-term relationship. It is always fun to have someone to dress up with, and when someone finds the Cinderella to their Prince Charming, this is a great way to enjoy a costume party together.

Designing costumes for film and theater can be a fun, exciting and rewarding career. But while you do need to have a good set of innate creative and artistic ability, you will also need to hone those skills through a formal education program. Luckily, there are good fashion design schools with costume design programs all across the country.

When you look at costume design education programs, you will find 2-year Associate degree programs, and 4-year Bachelor’s degree programs. Either will give you a good foundation and teach you the basics, but you will of course learn much more in a 4-year program. Choose what fits your needs and your budget.

When you are in school, you will learn about all aspects of costume design, including the differences of designing for film versus theater, how to work with the director and set designer, and much more. To be successful in school and in your career, you will need to have a good working knowledge of history, enjoy research, and have a thorough understanding of fabrics, sewing and fashion trends.

While you are in the later stages of your schooling, you will also want to look for good internship opportunities. This real-world experience will help you develop your abilities as a costume designer and give you an edge over the competition. To find an internship, look into school film and theater productions, and into projects with community theaters or production houses.

The job outlook for costume designers is stable, but does ebb and flow with the fortunes of the entertainment industry. To best establish yourself for a successful career, get a good education and internship under your belt.

The motion picture of the year at the 2011 Academy Awards was the period film “The King’s Speech.” Besides winning in this category and many others, the film was also nominated for the wonderful costume design spearheaded by Jenny Beaven. Beaven is no stranger to Oscar nominations, having been nominated a total of nine times in her career.

The movie is set in England, on the eve of World War II. The designs for the film capture the essence of the time and the characters in a way few costumes succeed at doing. Beaven has revealed that she had only five weeks to ready the costumes before shooting began, and a very small budget to work with.

To plan, Beaven spent a lot of time researching the King, the Queen and the times they lived in. She studied photos and read biographies, learning about the couple’s favorite colors and styles while altering some of their preferences to better fit the modern audience’s tastes and expectations. It’s a challenge that any costume designer must face when designing for a historical film.

Beaven has said she does not prefer to sketch out costumes. Instead, she pulls each costume together a piece at a time, mixing and matching to achieve the desired result. In the films she works on, much of the costumes are created from found pieces that she finds at rummage shops and prop stores combined with a few pieces created new. Beaven is also known for involving the actors in their costume development by asking them to try on different costumes and accepting their input. The result is always a costume design masterpiece, as in ‘The King’s Speech.’

If your dream is to put on a musical, you have some work ahead of you, but the results should be worth it. Of course, the first step is to choose a script that has several songs in it, and then make enough copies for the cast and crew. Once this step is complete, it is time to start seeking actors, crew members, and an appropriate venue.

The best way to start advertising auditions for a cast and crew is also the simplest way, which is to post flyers. This tried-and-true method can be performed by anyone, as long as you have access to a large batch of flyers that look good and knowledge of where to post them. Consider the desired ages of the cast and crew, and begin posting your advertisements around schools and local theater groups.

Once the ads have done their intended job of getting people interested in auditions, you will need to host the tryouts and then make a decision. The sooner you do this, the better, since rehearsals can start afterward. As your cast rehearses, start looking for a venue with a quality stage and plenty of room for the audience to sit.

Of course, you will need an audience in order for the musical to be successful, so you should work on putting out flyers once again. Post them anywhere you think people that are interested in theater or music will be. Make sure to list the show dates, time, location, ticket prices, and ticket purchasing info. Contact information is also important, in case people have questions.

Once these tasks are done, just keep directing the rehearsals until you are sure that you cast and crew members have it right. Making sure that they are ready for opening night is important in order to impress your audience. Keep in mind that one successful musical production can lead to more in the future.

Belly dancing is an ancient feminine activity originating in the Middle East. There are a number of different types of belly dance, including Egyptian, Turkish, Lebanese, Tribal and American Cabaret. What all belly dancers have in common is the need to learn costuming, hair and makeup techniques prior to performing in public. While each genre of the dance has its own unique style, there are some basic rules to follow for great stage presence.

The most important thing to consider when creating a costume for belly dance is the security of the garment in maintaining the dancer’s modesty. Dance costumes must fit very tightly, with little or no stretch to the fabric. This will keep the costume from becoming loose or dislodged during a physically active dance. Accessories to the costume such as wrist, ankle and armbands can add decorative spice, but should fashioned in such a way that they cannot become caught on the costume. Hair styles for belly dancers typically include long, free locks, whether straight, wavy or curly. The hair may be held back off of the face with a decorative, matching headband, or secured into a tight bun at the back of the head and complemented with a number of yarn or fabric braids, flowers or extensions.

Stage makeup for dancers is usually quite exotic. It also must be able to endure a dancer’s perspiration and exertions over a few hours. Most dancers keep the foundation makeup quite light, and use a translucent powder to absorb oils and perspiration. The eyes are heavily lined with black kohl or liquid eyeliner, creating an Egyptian cat’s eye effect. Dancers may also use false eyelashes to further enhance their eyes. Smoky eye shadows complete the look.

Whether or not it is apparent to the audience, actors and actresses in plays and films have all had a great deal of stage makeup applied prior to their performances. Even those who are supposed to look as though they have just woken up, fought a zombie horde or survived a military battle have had extensive time in the make up chair. Learning how to apply stage makeup well takes a great deal of time, most of which is spent watching, helping and training under stage makeup professionals. The easiest type of stage makeup is usually for a more normal look.

The first step to great stage makeup is to start with a flawless canvas. For that reason, makeup artists will insist on a clean face before they get to work. The artist will apply a thick foundation over the exposed face and neck area, paying special attention to hide any blemishes, unwanted beauty marks and scars. Next, the artist will need to bring out the actor’s features so that the finished result does not look like a blank mask. Shadowing along the cheek bones, jaw and nose will help define the features. The eyes typically receive a great deal of attention in stage makeup. Heavy eye liner, usually black or very dark brown, is applied to both the upper and lower lash lines. Next, false eyelashes are applied with an adhesive. Finally, eye shadow is used to define and create the desired look of the eyes. Some applications may cause for the eyes to appear bright and wide open, while others may call for a more shadowed and mysterious look. When applying lipstick for the stage, the lips are usually lined slightly larger than the actors’s actual lips. A similarly colored lipstick is then used to fill in the lips, making sure that the actors’ mouth is well defined and visible from the audience.

Costume design is becoming a fast growing industry, especially among recent American college graduates. The glamour and thrill of working in New York or Hollywood is especially enticing to young adults, many of whom have been interested in the industry for years. Costume designers typically have degrees in fashion design, art history, film or another related major. The field is quite competitive, and many beginning designers must intern for quite some time before they are hired for projects of their own.

Modern costume designers do much more than just research the clothing of a specific era or nationality. They will also create costumes that help forge and define the characters. They work with the sets and director in order to establish the details before beginning to select styles or fabrics. Costume design can be particularly creative when the project involves a fantasy or science fiction theme when there are no historical references for the actors’ clothing.

Those who are interested in entering the field of costume design should understand that much work and effort is required before the job gets interesting. Potential designers will spend hours assisting or apprenticing to established designers. They will also be called upon to prepare the research necessary when designing period clothing for plays or films. There are a number of considerations that may need to be dealt with, including what actions the actors will be taking while wearing the costumes, whether or not they will be outside in the weather and the types of lighting that the scenes will call for. All of these variables will help dictate what types of fabric are used for the costumes and whether or not duplicates of certain costumes should be available. For instance, if a scene calls for a costume to be ruined or destroyed, having to do several takes may call for multiple, but easy to secure costumes for the actors.

From the sweeping ball gowns of the Civil War era to the streamlined and fringed dress of the 1920s flapper, costumes are an integral part of what makes a film or theater production. Without the appropriate costumes for the region, style and era, no movie or play would be able to accurately convey the true stories as they were written. For this reason, accurate period costuming is a necessity in the entertainment industry.

During the time of the Roman Empire, most women and men wore similar clothing in the form of tunics and draped fabric stoles or togas. By medieval times, costumes, especially for women, had evolved into much more complicated arrangements including yards of fabric in gored sections. This created that wide, flared skirt that ensured a woman’s modesty by hiding the shape of her lower body. During this same period men began wearing the codpiece as a statement of their strength and prowess. By the Victorian era, women’s garb had become even more complicated and restrictive with elaborately boned corsets, yards of fabric devoted to undergarments, and the covering of all skin other than the face and hands. At the same time, clothing for men was becoming much simpler.

The clothing for women in the twentieth century changed drastically in nearly every decade. In the 1920s, women’s dress was much more androgynous than previous generations. Dropped waists and shorter skirts, along with simple, bucket-shaped hats, combined to make even the most curvaceous women appear boyish. By the 1930s and 40s, femininity had once again declared itself in the shapes of women’s clothing with rigid bras, girdles and the re-emergence of the defined waistline. However, the carefree 60s brought back the idea of non-gender specific clothing with both boys and girls sporting tie-dyed t-shirts, low slung bell-bottomed jeans and sneakers. Even hair styles converged with both genders choosing to wear their hair long, straight and parted down the middle.

Most cosmetologists are trained in hair cutting, facial hair styling, coloring and permanent waves. Some cosmetologists may special in certain areas such as hair coloring or African American hair styling. Others may choose to focus on manicuring and related nail technician skills. All cosmetologists and barbers in the United States are required to be licensed before they can work in their trade. Cosmetologists may be employed by a salon, rent a station within an established salon, or work out of their own homes. Those who are employed may work for an hourly salary or simply commission on their services and any products they are able to sell. Those who rent stations or booths typically have to pay for their own supplies and materials, putting a dent into their actual earnings.

Most cosmetology programs take about a year to complete, with testing for the state boards immediately following in order to have the license issued. Licences must be renewed periodically, and most cosmetologists have to continually update their education and skills to accommodate new innovations in the field and current trends and fads.

While there are a few states who still allow training to be completing by apprenticing to a licensed cosmetologists, this is very rare and not a recommended way for beginning cosmetologists to learn their trade.

Costume design for film and theater is an exciting career choice that is becoming more popular among American college graduates. However, many people are unsure how to tailor a college education for this field. Because most colleges do not offer a major titled “Costume Design,” students mistakenly believe that those schools do not offer a major that will benefit them in their field of choice. This is not necessarily the case. There are a number of related majors that, when combined with a relevant minor field of study, will provide students with an acceptable background to enter the costume design industry, either in New York, Hollywood or even abroad.

Most state colleges and universities will offer a major field of study in art, whether it be art history, design or another similar subject. When combined with a minor or even a double major in fashion or fashion design, the student will likely emerge with an educational background conducive to even the most stringent of employment requirements. Being able to speak on the history of art and fashion within a specific era is a skill that translates automatically into expertise in costume design. The additional creative arts study within the realm of design will also help with designing costumes for a more fantastical type of project, such as swords and sorcery or even science fiction. Oddly enough, even a minor in English literature or literature of one of the romance languages will add a great flavor to a major in fashion design. Again, being able to converse intelligently about the period in question, its values, styles and ways of interacting, becomes of utmost importance to those who contact for costume design services.

While education is the primary factor, it is also a good idea to participate in the theatrical arts while completing your degree. Having your volunteer work in college productions on your resume is a huge bonus and may be the deciding factor when a project manager is choosing between you and another recent graduate.

Just as you may enjoy dressing up you children in cute outfits and playful costumes, you can also love dressing up pets in much the same way. There are many different pet outfits that you can buy for special occasions, like dresses and tuxedos that rival the real deal in terms of style. Imagine including your special pet in your wedding and dressing him or her up for the special event.

However, weddings aren’t the only occasion when pet costumes are appropriate. Halloween is another time when dressing your pet up is fun. Pet costumes come in many different styles and types to suit your individual pet. You can dress your dog or cat up like a pirate, a cowboy, a ladybug or bumblebee, a hot dog, a candy bar, or a whole host of other items or characters to suit your needs. Dress your bulldog up like a biker, or your dachshund as a frankfurter to get a laugh out of everyone that you pass.

Pet costumes can also be highly functional. They can keep your pets warm on cold winter nights during the Christmas season. They can keep delicate feet dry and safe while hiking rough terrain. They can protect sensitive hairless skin from damage from the elements like sun and snow. Keeping your pets safe and comfortable can be fashionable, as it is not difficult to find adorable pet outfits that are also highly functional and beneficial to the well-being of your pet.

Whether you are looking for the perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas, Halloween, or some other special occasion, pet costumes can go a long way in contributing to you and your pet’s enjoyment. Amass your own collection of pet costumes and pet clothing and you will always have the perfect outfit for every occasion that arises.

In this day and age, you never know when success will hit you in the face. If you have talent and can create your own designs, you may want to start your own business. You can start small and grow your business.

The Internet has opened the door to a number of opportunities. Many fashion designers over look the Internet as a place to start selling their designs. Many people with little education and a simple idea were highly successful on the Internet. For example, a homemaker with a daughter decided to dress of her daughter’s crocs. She added sparkles and other cute little embellishments. Everyone loved her daughter’s embellished crocs.

Since the crocs seemed to be a hit, she began selling them online. Her business was a huge success. Over a period of a couple of years, she actually became a millionaire. One small idea grew in to a million dollar business.

As a designer, you can create your own web site displaying and selling your designs. You will gain exposure and you can gradually build a customer base. Since you do not have a physical store to be concerned with, your overhead will be minimal. As your business grows, you can then think about a physical store or selling your clothes at existing retail stores.

There are a number of sites that you can sell your clothes on such as the auction sites. It will take hard work and dedication but you can succeed if you have a quality product to sell.

If you cannot wait until you break into the fashion industry, then you can create your own industry in the comforts of your own home. With the right talent and dedication, you may be able to create a profitable business doing what you love. The Internet may help you achieve your goals and dreams.

There is more to fashion design than just making a pretty drawing. A fashion designer needs an entire tool chest of skills to be successful. One of those skills is sewing talent. This does not mean simply stitching a seam. It requires the ability to take the design of the page and create patterns.

To create patterns, you need to have a great deal of technical skills. You have to understand how the pieces of fabric are going to come together to create the design in the drawing. You also have to know how to sew the pieces together so the design fits flawlessly.

If you think you want to be a designer and you do not like to sew, this may not be the career for you. Otherwise, you will want to find a great fashion design school to perfect your talent. There are several famous designers that did not have an education. However, they had talent and making it without an education is rare.

Attending school will give you the necessary knowledge you will need to be a designer. However, fashion design school is competitive and demanding. Many students end up dropping out because the pressure and competition are intense. While you may enjoy creating designs, if you are not passionate about it, it is unlikely that you will succeed.

Getting in to a great school is a challenge. You have to have a portfolio of your designs. It is also helpful if you have pictures of designs that you took from the drawing board and on to a model or mannequin. When applying to a fashion school, you want your portfolio to demonstrate your talent and best work.

Becoming a fashion designer is no easy task. However, for those that are truly passionate, it will provide a rewarding career.

Reality shows and movies that have anything to do with the fashion industry usually do quite well. The American public has become enamored with the industry. The fashion industry has jumped off the pages of magazines onto the big and little screen. The world of fashion is the new rage and anything to do with the industry is a hot item.

The downside to this is now everybody wants to be a fashion designer. People that have little or usually no experience are clamoring to find their way into the industry. Most believe they will be successful because they have a good eye for fashion. They believe keeping up with the latest trends is their ticket to become a designer.

It is easy to keep up with the latest trends when those trends are hanging on the racks in stores. Wearing the latest trend does not mean you have what it takes to be a designer. The designers create the trends. To be a fashion designer, you have to be able create unique concepts. This requires you to have a vision of the texture and color of the material for each design.

Some famous designers did not attend school and made it big. However, these designers were passionate and new they wanted to be designers at a very young age. These designers had a natural talent and above all, they had vision. They could create amazing designs. This natural talent is rare.

If you are not passionate about design and lack creativity, fashion design is not for you. To be successful requires dedication and incredible talent. Without passion, it is unlikely that you will experience much success in the fashion world. While the movies and television make it look glamorous, the reality is, you must have talent to make it in the industry.

This show is about prominent housewives in the Atlanta area. While the show is not specifically geared toward the fashion industry, a couple of the housewives attempted to create their own fashion lines. This made for great entertainment.

The show proves that it takes more than a sense of style to become a fashion designer or to create a fashion line. Of course, the wives hire designers to create the fashions. Reality TV shows like this can provide starving fashion designers some work. It seems everyone wants to create their clothing line and they must hire designers that will create the line for them.

For fashion lovers, this is a great show to watch. Watching inexperienced women attempt to launch a successful clothing line is comical. They have no idea how difficult it is to launch a successful line. These women rely on their love of fashion, however, that is not enough.

The fashion shows that these women lined up were a disaster and the clothes were awful. They must have hired inexperienced designers, because the clothes were tacky at best. What is even more laughable, both women thought their shows were a success. They also thought their clothing line was to die for. You would probably die if you actually had to wear them.

Neither of the women would admit to defeat. In addition, there friends told them the shows and clothes were wonderful. So, they probably did believe their clothing lines were great.

For some reason people have the impression that being a fashion designer and creating a clothing line is easy. Well, anyone can create a clothing line. The trick is creating a successful clothing line. To create a successful clothing line you need talent, skill and a tremendous amount of hard work. This show proves it takes more than just a sense of style to create a clothing line.

The Rachel Zoe Project first aired in September 2008. Since then it has become a highly popular reality show. Rachel Zoe is a celebrity stylist, clothing designer and author. She works hard at what she does and she expects everyone else to work just as hard. The viewers get to watch her try to expand her business while she attempts to maintain a personal life.

She was successful before she got this show and the show has made her a household name. She is based in Los Angeles and viewers love getting a little insight on celebrity stylists. Rachel’s popularity continues to increase. Her Facebook and Twitter pages exploded with fans.

Viewers seem to lover Rachel’s fast paced life. Every episode is filled with time lines that must be met or it will be the end of the world. Her assistants struggle to keep up the pace and struggle to survive. It is not easy working with Rachel and her pace is fast and furious. However, the rewards are just as great.

Her assistants get to work with celebrity clients and often accompany Rachel to fashion shows that the average person cannot attend. Rachel rarely takes a break from work and demonstrates how dedication and hard work pay off. She is truly passionate about the work she does and that is why many fans adore her.

Her show will continue to be successful. Her show is entertaining and Rachel’s quirky personality and quips are endearing to fans. Her team has restructured since Taylor Jacobson left. Brad Goreski is not Rachel’s right hand man, which is probably the most stressful position anyone can have.

All of the changes will provide for eventful television as viewers continue to hang on Rachel’s every word. Every show has some dilemma that must be overcome and often Rachel uses humor to deal with the situation.

Lauren Conrad has made a career as a reality TV star. She first appeared on The Hills and Laguna Beach. She will now have a new show on MTV. The MTV documentary reality program will follow Lauren as she attempts to launch her new fashion line. This is her return to reality TV since she left The Hills in 2009.

Whether viewers will enjoy this show remains to be seen. However, for those interested in fashion design it may provide an exceptional learning experience. There is nothing better than watching another designer try to launch a new clothing line. This show will provide valuable insight to fashion designers that would eventually like to launch their own line of clothing

The show will be dramatic. All reality TV must meet that requirement to survive. However, it will provide insight to the business end of fashion design. This is one aspect of the business that many fashion designers fail or have sufficient knowledge. Since she is still a popular reality star and has a large fan base, the show should at least last a couple of seasons.

The popularity of reality fashion related shows continues to increase. This show will probably do well. The viewing public just does not seem to get tired of fashion reality TV.

The fashion industry is a tough business and until reality TV came along, few outsiders ever got a glimpse of what really goes on in the industry. The viewing audience is fascinated with the industry.

Lauren’s show should provide enough mishaps and drama to make this an interesting show. For fashion designers this will provide a great learning experience. You will be able to learn from Lauren’s mistakes and get a real idea of what it takes to launch a clothing line. While the show will be overly dramatized, it will provide entertainment.

The Fashion Show, as it is most commonly referred to, had its first run in May 2009. The show starts with 15 fashion designers and they compete to win $125,000. In addition, the winning designer will get to have retail stores sell his or her designs. In the final show, the American viewing public gets to choose the winner.

The premise is similar to other design shows. The designers compete to create winning designs and are usually restricted by theme, time and materials. Each week a designer is eliminated. The designers compete in teams and the chosen winner of the overall challenge wins immunity from elimination.

Of course, the designers in the teams rarely get along and always have creative differences. This makes for a great deal of fighting and drama. The show is a replacement for Project Runway. Project Runway moved to another network. The Fashion Show is not quite as popular as Project Runway, but it is only in its infancy.

There is enough drama and competition in this show to keep viewers happy. The goal of any reality show is to have enough outrageous and over the top behavior to keep viewers interested. This show provides enough of both.

The TV viewing audience is hooked on anything that has to do with fashion. This show will develop quite a following. For new designers or those that intend on becoming designers, these type of shows provide a great deal of insight to the fashion industry. While some of it is dramatized for ratings, it still provides an education about fashion design.

The Fashion Show may not topple Project Runway, but it will develop a large fan base. The show provides enough conflict to keep viewers watching. The added bonus is fans of the show get to vote for the winning designer.

Project Runway first aired in 2004 and since then it is one of the most popular reality shows. This is a show where fashion designers compete for the top spot. Many unknown fashion designers would love to be on the show. It does provide great exposure. Although, that may not always be a good thing.

The show relies on a gradual elimination process to reduce the initial 12 designers to three designers. The three finalist will compete in a final challenge. The challenge for many designers is not knowing what to expect. This show really challenges the creativity of each designer.

The designers must create, design and sew their designs. In all of its seasons, you would think the show would run out of ideas to torture the designers. Designers have to use a unique set of materials on every challenge. For example, in season three designers had to use recyclable material and items found in a grocery store.

The competition is pretty rough as these designers compete to make it to the final challenge. As with any reality show, there is always drama, fights and someone always breaks down and cries.

Some of the designers had to be picked for the show because they are a little crazy. Otherwise, the show would be pretty boring. Some of the designers (or they claimed to be designers) have come up with some atrocious designs. What is really funny are most of them act highly offended when their piece gets criticized. Apparently, they really believe their design is awesome.

The show continues to be one of the top reality shows. People seem to enjoy the drama and love the crazy challenges the producers create. Some of the designers that have been on the show are quite talented. However, most people want to see the designers that really should not be designers.

If you are serious about becoming a fashion designer, then applying to the top fashion design schools may be your next step. Getting into the top fashion schools is difficult. The application process is highly competitive. You will need to research and prepare before applying to the schools.

The first step is to choose the schools you wish to attend. You can request an application package from each of the schools you chose. You should request the package at least six months to one year in advance. Once you have received your packages you need to review each of the applications and portfolio requirements.

Make copies of each of the applications. Begin filling in the requested information on the copies. You can highlight areas in which you may be lacking requirements. Over the next six months or year, you will find ways to meet the requirements in which you may fall short. For example, if the application has an area regarding community involvement, you will want to join an organization to fulfill this area. While this may not prevent you from being accepted, your goal is to have as few empty spaces on the application as possible.

The tops schools will request your portfolio. If you do not have one established, it is time to put one together. This portfolio should demonstrate your creativity. You work should be original and you should only include your best work. This is an opportunity to set you apart from other applicants. This may be the most important part of the application process. If the school feels you lack creativity, your application will be denied.

Getting into one of the top fashion schools is a serious matter. By preparing in advance, you will increase your chances of acceptance. Make sure you research the school thoroughly to find out what each school looks for in a potential applicant.

There are more reality shows than anyone can count. Yet the viewing public appears to crave more reality TV. The world of fashion reality shows also continues to grow. Audiences are fascinated with every aspect of the fashion industry. Actually, they are more interested in seeing fashionistas behaving badly. The most popular shows are the shows in which people compete for coveted positions in the fashion industry. The fashion industry has been shrouded in mystery and intrigue for years. Now its dirty little secrets are exposed in the world of reality TV. The viewing public, however, seems more interested in watching young hopefuls suffer for their trade.

Most of the fashion reality shows portray an industry that is highly competitive and quite unforgiving. It is enough to scare future fashionistas to choose a different career path. While many of the shows exaggerate situations, the industry is still a tough and competitive business sector. People do not want to watch shows that are flowery and have happy endings. Viewers love to watch shows filled with drama, backstabbing and fights.

While the world of fashion is glamorous and exciting, it does require a competitive spirit and hard work to reach the top. Sadly, there is a limited amount of positions available at the top. The fashion reality shows continue to be popular among viewers. The popularity is attributed to the drama. The viewers do not seem to be interested in the inner workings of the fashion industry. The more drama a show packs in to its season, the more popularity it will garner.

As the popularity of reality TV continues to increase, more shows will develop to provide the viewing public with the drama they crave. You can expect to see many new fashion reality shows in the future. Unfortunately, it is not about the fashion it is about drama and people behaving badly.

Beyonce Knowles is quite arguably the most popular woman singer of all time. She has numerous Grammys, and a career profile that is quite impressive. Music, fashion, and dance are her passions and she tries to combine them harmoniously in everything she does.

Beginning at an early age, Beyonce was involved in music and dance. Her father was a professional record manager and her mother was a costume designer. They knew their way around the music industry and used their influence to put Beyonce, and her sister, Solange, on the track to stardom. Beyonce was in a music group, Girl’s Tyme, as a child and made an appearance on America’s Got Talent, where she didn’t first succeed.

From 1997 to 2001, Beyonce was a member of Destiny’s Child, a highly successful girl’s R&B group. Then Beyonce went solo when the group broke up. Three solo albums later, Beyonce is still at the top of her game and has released several top songs, including the most infamous: “Single Ladies” (Put a Ring on It).

In 2006, Beyonce and Jay-Z, a rap artist tied the knot in New York City. Their relationship had been under wraps for quite some time and the announcement was made when her album, “I am… Sasha Fierce,” was released.

Beyonce has always had a passion for fashion. She was influenced at a young age by her grandmother’s and mother’s careers in the industry. Beyonce released a clothing line called House of Dereon, named after her grandma, and has promoted the line through her music. Dereon features mostly outwear, but there are also purses, jewelry, and other accessories as well. She has made a huge statement around the world, and her fashion choices are noticeably different on the runway than they are in her music videos. She is a woman with eclectic tastes, yet elegant styles.

Fashion design is a glamorous and exciting world. At least it looks that way in magazines and reality shows. The truth is fashion design requires phenomenal skills, dedication and hard work. Few people understand the world of fashion and the skills required to be a successful designer. The world of fashion design is one of the most competitive business sectors a person can enter. It is also one of the most difficult sectors to get into. Getting your foot in the door requires determination and the willingness to take jobs that have little to do with fashion design. Before you attempt to enter the competitive world of fashion design, you will want to make sure you have the necessary skills to survive and flourish.

Fashion designers do more than draw pretty pictures of clothes. A successful fashion designer must be a talented artist that is creative and innovative. Many people can draw and sketch beautiful clothes; however, they may lack the creativity to develop original concept ideas.

Many fashion designers fail because they lack proper communication skills and are unable to function in a team environment. It is unlikely you will find a job in fashion design where you work completely on your own. Learning the art of skillful communication is essential. In addition, you must know how to deal with difficult people and have the skill to maneuver the team environment.

The fashion industry requires long hours and flexibility. To be successful, you have to be flexible and able to deal with unexpected situations. Above all, you must be willing to perform any task that is given. Those that are unwilling to perform the tasks that need to be done will eventually be guided to the exit door of the fashion industry.

If you want a career as a fashion designer, you must look past the glamour and realize the unglamorous tasks are just as important.

What is the job of a costume designer? Is it to simply dress the actor or actresses, and put some earrings and other accessories on them to complete the look?

Costume designers have the job of making sure that the actor, actress, entertainer or celebrity looks stunning, appealing and makes a lasting impression at the first glimpse. They have the knowledge of understanding the importance of incorporating appeal with color and style into their presentations. Their decisions on costume selections and presentations can do a lot to affect the industry overall.

The job of a costume designer does include the task of selecting colors, materials and accessories, but the overall job of their role is so much more involved.

1.) Depending on the role cast or the entertainer’s theme, they have to select their wardrobe that fits in with the theme. To do this, they may have to research the event to find out more information to help them decide on which way to go with the presentation. They may also have to do a bit of research to find out any history or pertinent material on what they’re trying to design a costume for. All of this makes a difference in how and what they decide to do as a result.

2.) Selecting the costumes depends also on the entertainer’s or the celebrity’s preference and style. The costume designer may have a great idea for a costume, but if it doesn’t fit the personality of the celebrity, it may not go over so well. This is often only important if the celebrity is a big name person. On other events, the costume designer gets to use their own creative judgment when it comes to using a particular design or theme.

The designer should always take these things into consideration when doing their jobs. They can help them make the right choices and help everybody shine.

To find your true fashion color, you must know what looks good on you. What enhances your beauty? What colors make you stand out and get noticed more often?

It is true that there are certain colors that people can wear that will be more attractive on them than other colors. They can make a person look brighter, younger, better and fresher than anything else. Not to mention the fact that certain colors can also make a person feel better as well.

It’s also beneficial to know that colors are not the only beauty-enhancing method that a person can use. They can also use stripes, patterns and even certain materials to enhance their beauty. So how can you find your fashion color?

- Take in all compliments. When people tell you that a certain color is flattering on you, or that it is very "becoming" on you, take it in and mull it over. Obviously, they find that it is attractive on you, so you can safely say that it is one (or more) of your "colors."

- Take a look at the inside portion of the area just above your wrist. The undertones in your skin are an indication of what colors will flatter you, or which ones will make you look washed out. If you have orange undertones, your colors are going to be dark, rich hues like blues, purples, browns and golds. If you have yellow undertones, your most beauty-enhancing colors are going to be bright colors like pinks, oranges and yellows.

- Have a makeup consultation done to find out your colors. There are beauty consultants who are trained to identify flattering colors on their clients. They may use a color wheel, or rely on their skilled, trained eye to assess your colors. They can do makeovers for you in colors that will flatter your skin tone in many ways.

Where do your strengths lie when it comes to fashion and creativity? Do you know how to spark your own creativity and find what works well for you? Many times, creative people find that they are inspired by various things. What those things are sometimes all depends on what the person likes, what they’re accustomed to being around and even the things that DON’T appeal to them.

Many designers use creativity sparks when they work so as to help them make their pieces all genuine and as original as possible. This also holds true for anybody who has an interest in creative things. That creativity can be in designing, structuring, building something or in the smallest details in all of it.

Think about how you feel when you’re working and you get a rush of creative energy. What was it around you that made you feel that way? Whether it was a picture, a person or music, try to have that same thing around you each time you need to fuel some creativity. Over time, you’ll find yourself reaching for that creative help when you need to produce something great.

If you require a catalyst for your creativity, then by all means use it! Don’t apologize that you have to use something, and never feel like you’re using a symbolic "crutch" just because you have to use something. The best and often most famous designers are those who will say that they are sparked when a particular event happens or when their circumstances are ideal, for them.

Creativity is such a conditional thing, that it’s hard to say what will and even what won’t work for someone. The best approach is to find the things that spark your own creativity, use those things as often as you can and take those results for what they’re worth.

Becoming a designer in the fashion industry is the dream of many aspiring stylists and designers. It is a goal that is very reachable if the person is motivated and willing to learn. The industry is highly competitive, and there are many people who choose to give up before they reach their goals and dreams. However, becoming a designer has many multiple benefits for the person who is willing to hang in there and make it all happen.

First, determine what is driving your desire to design. Do you have a flair for style? Do you enjoy and get great satisfaction from seeing a design form or come to life with your creativity? These are the marks of a true designer who has the heart for the craft. That person is willing to learn and look out for any opportunities that come their way where they will be able to use their skills.

Next, find a way to enhance and build your education for a career in the field of designing. Find a design school, either offline or online, to attend to get more knowledge and education about your industry. You enhance your chances of getting jobs or getting hired if you show education and other training on your resume.

Always stay teachable from those around you in every capacity. Whether that’s your school instructor or your peers, being teachable is a very important part of what makes a student a great success.

It’s important to always make yourself available for any chances that come your way, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. Whether it’s a small part in costume designing for the local high school, or the chance to work with a celebrity, all opportunities are worth the effort. You should take each and every one of them as you travel on the road towards your designing dream.

What are the rules of fashion? Are there really any hard and fast rules that a person must observe?

Fashion is a relative idea. What appeals to one person may or may not appeal to another person. Therefore, the first rule of fashion is…that there are no rules! But for the sake of keeping fashion on a creative level, there are some tips that designers follow and people follow so as to keep things flowing smoothly for them.

- Always give fashion credit. This normally applies to designers and creative people. This means that if your design, your style or look was inspired by someone, give them credit for the design and tell what the inspired part was. It’s in poor taste to take credit for something that you didn’t have any part in.

- Go with what works. But remember, to keep your fashion smooth looking. Be free-spirited and use your creativity, but also have a reasoning behind what your choices were. It’s likely that no one will question why you’ve chosen what you have, but the likelihood is still there. In other words, are you pairing ankle boots with leggings and a short to get noticed, or for functional convenience? It’s always good to be able to explain your fashion choices.

- Let your inspirations show through. Creativity is the hallmark of all good fashions. When a person is inspired, they feel good when they are allowed to let their choices show through and get the attention they want for it. This also inspires others and can spark creativity in them as well.

Following rules is too constricting and too stifling. That would be just following rules for the sake of it. But by observing a few unspoken tips, you will find that it’s much easier and better for fostering creative energy.

What’s the difference between a stylist and a designer? Don’t they both make people look good? Aren’t they both the same thing?

Although a stylist and a designer are in many ways similar, they are not both the same thing. They have job similarities that can lap over into each other, but overall, their jobs are vastly different in a large respect.

- Accessories

A costume designer looks for accessories that will enhance the creation that they’ve made. They may even design something specifically for the costume, just to ensure that it gives off the initial impression they want.

A stylist takes available accessories and uses them for the purposes they already have. They don’t create (necessarily), but they use available resources. They may offer their insights to the designer, but they primarily rely on their creative sparks and available resources.

- Clothing

A costume designer actually designs clothes for their clients. They take the personality of the character, entertainer, etc. and works with it to make something specifically for that individual.

A stylist takes clothing from different designers and creates a "look." Their creative abilities are in what they can do with the things they’re given. This is where their creative abilities count for a lot, and their choices can make the costume designer shine!
A person with multiple skills in both areas could certainly successfully do both jobs. On many television sets and entertainment sets, they may in fact lap over. However, in order for there to be a uniform consistency in the way each duty is performed, it’s best to have a designated stylist and a designated costume designer. This makes the overall presentation more stunning, more impressive and keeps each person’s creative work in the area that best suits them and the task they’re working with.

For the really creative, artsy person who wants to explore their flair for design and style, the best way to achieve that is for them to tap into as many resources as they can. This may include going to some type of formal school in order to achieve the education and skills that are necessary to obtain a job in the market. There are many individuals who decide to attend school either in a local school or online. Pursuing an online education degree has quickly become a method of choice since it offers such flexibility and convenience for the aspiring design student.

Attending school online does offer multiple benefits. The student can work in the fashion and styling industry alongside going to school at the same time. They wouldn’t have to sacrifice either one to satisfy the other.

By going to school online, they are also able to immediately apply the knowledge they have obtained. They can use this as they acquire it and help further their aspiring careers along at the same time. It’s also good theory in practice to be able to readily apply skills learned through their lessons.

If the student attends a design school that is large enough, they may also have access to other students so that they can share ideas, get feedback and have a resource pool of information from their fellow students.

There seems to also be a larger selection of design topics and courses of study to choose from with the online education portals. Students that have more options tend to choose their areas of study more carefully, and also tend to stay with their pursuits longer. This is usually because they can find the things that appeal to them and satisfy them best. If they are happy, their chances at achieving their goals are greater and more likelier.

The fashion reality television shows that are on the air today have more of an affect on viewer watching than most people realize. The reality shows depict the actions of real life people and their points of view on different matters. Many of these television characters become celebrities in their own way. Viewers begin to look at them as more than a cast of characters.

As more drama and interaction is built into the story lines, the characters popularity begins to grow and attract more of the viewer’s attention. This also creates more of a demand of the reality television characters, and more of a curiosity of what’s going on in their lives.

Fashion reality shows take a group of fashion designers, stylists and models and places them all together to see how they will behave and interact with each other. They are usually given a project to complete as a team or in rare cases, alone. As the show depicts them going about their daily routines of completing the project, the show also depicts what the character’s own choices and thoughts are concerning fashion and style.

Over time, the reality shows become popular, and the character’s opinions become news for the fashion magazines. Once the fashion and style community has an idea of what’s trendy on the reality show set, they begin to showcase those ideas to the public. This is when fashion trends begin to change, because the consumer audience wants what they see depicted on the shows. Especially if there is a favorite character, drama or the persons design was especially popular, the demand and search for their item can be extensive.

Designers usually tap into this demand quickly and go with the flow of the trend. Fashions change, demands change and styles change, all based on the very real reality shows story lines.

When you see certain colors, you may experience certain emotions. For instance, the color red may invoke creativity and make you feel inspired. The same thing holds true for other colors, and various studies have been conducted to prove that theory.

For instance, if you have ever noticed the color in restaurants, you will see that brown and gold are most often the popular color of choice. That’s because research has shown that those colors strike hunger signals in a person’s mind, and in a restaurant, that’s an ideal situation. Those colors make the customers hungrier, and what better place to satisfy that urge!

In fashion, colors are very important as well for stimulating certain areas of the brain and creating a mood. Colors are also good for sparking creativity and helping to shape the presentation of a fashion design or piece.

Do you want to create a peaceful, calming feeling? Surround yourself with white and off-white to achieve that. The mind pictures feelings of being carefree, open and stress-free.

What about a feeling of softness and being gentle? Then pink is your color to be able to achieve that. Along with that comes feelings too of romanticism and beauty.

If you want to feel strong, powerful and regal, then you’ll need lots of purple in your life. Maybe even a hint of red as well. These strong, bold colors will do the trick.

For a feeling of being bright, airy and whimsical, yellow is then the color that will keep you light on your feet.

The mind is very powerful and able to grasp a lot of information at one time. Colors affect the mental state of a person in a varied amount of ways, so it’s always good to surround yourself with colors and see what the interesting results can be.

It can be a challenging duel to try and match colors if you’re not very adept at doing it. Many people have a hard time trying to decipher shades of different colors, and trying to find out what colors are complementary and work best together. But is it really that big of a deal on what colors look like and how well they go together?

In fashion, color is everything and yes, it is a huge deal! The mystery behind colors in fashion is that there is no right or wrong application to making colors work. You can put different colors together, create a look with opposite colors and even break color “rules” and do what you want. So why is it such a big deal?

For one, in fashion, the way you put colors together have a lot to do with what people will perceive as something that “looks good.” If you put together red and pink, you should add a splash of other things that incorporate those colors so that it all blends in together and makes a cohesive presentation.

Matching only requires a sharp eye. If you know what is eye-catching and appealing, then you know what you can put together that will make the same effect with other people. To match colors together, place them side by side, stacked and away from each other to see how they present and also how they contrast.

You can also safely match colors by using a color wheel to see what colors complement one another and which ones oppose one another. Large color wheels will give you samples of colors from all over the color spectrum. You can see hues, shades and density on many wheels. The color wheel is used by many stylists and designers to help them do their jobs.
